Maria Manso (PI)
Professor for Civil Engineering
Lusófona University, Lisbon, Portugal
Dr Maria Manso is an Assistant Professor for Civil Engineering at Lusófona University in Lisbon since 2022 and a Researcher at CERIS - Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability since 2019. She graduated in Architecture in 2004 at Instituto Superior Técnico and worked as an Architect cooperating with studios in Portugal and the United Kingdom. In 2011 started working as a research fellow at C-MADE and worked as a teaching assistant of Materials for the Master of Architecture, University of Beira Interior. In 2019, completed her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Beira Interior. Her domain activities are sustainable materials and systems design. Her research interests are the design and analysis of Nature-based Solutions, with a special interest in green roofs and green walls, their benefits and costs, and looking to find alternative ways to create more sustainable solutions.
Rieke Hansen
Professor for Open Space and Ecological Urban Design
Geisenheim University, Germany
Dr Rieke Hansen is Professor for Open Space and Ecological Urban Design at the Institute of Open Space Development at Geisenheim University since November 2019. She has a background in open space and landscape planning and is a registered landscape architect. Her research is concerned with questions of planning and designing multifunctional and resilient urban green infrastructure that provides multiple social and ecological benefits. She has researched landscape and open space planning in metropolitan regions and cities in Germany, Europe, and the USA. Her international research projects included the BiodivERsA project URBES, the FP7 project GREEN SURGE, and the Horizon 2020 project proGIreg. Her approach is inter- and transdisciplinary and application-oriented with a focus on exchange of knowledge between research and practice.
Andrea Nóblega Carriquiry
PhD Candidate in Geography
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain
Andrea holds a B.Sc. degree with honours in architecture, and obtained a double master degree in M.Sc. International Cooperation in Urban Development (Technische Universität Darmstadt) and International Cooperation: Sustainable Emergency Architecture (Universitat Internacional de Catalunya) as part of the Mundus Urbano program through an Erasmus+ scholarship. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, in the Department of Geography, financed by FI 2020 funds. Her research focuses on the eco-social and eco-political facets of Nature-based Solutions and how they can contribute to more just and sustainable strategies in flood management. From an Urban Political Ecology perspective, she analyzes them as socio-technical systems, regarding its governance processes and structures, environmental tradeoffs, social acceptance and environmental justice issues.
Joana Guerrin
Researcher in Political Sciences
INRAE, France
Dr Joana Guerrin is a researcher in Political Science at the French National Research Institute for Food, Agriculture and Environment (INRAE). Her lab GESTE (Territorial management for water and the Environment) is located in Strasbourg. She is developing research on flood policy governance, and in particular about the changes nature-based solutions bring to risk governance. She is coordinating different research projects aimed at analyzing Nature-based Solutions governance at local levels (i.e. Strasbourg or Rhône delta), NbS institutionalization at national levels (in France and the US) and NbS genealogy and concept diffusion at the international level. She holds a PhD in Political Science from Montpellier University (France).
Manuel Beißler
Researcher in Digital Environmental Planning
Leibniz University Hannover, Germany
Manuel Beissler is a Researcher in the field of Nature-based Solutions in urban planning at the inter- and transdisciplinary Research Group SEE-URBAN-WATER. As exchange student in Nicaragua, he conducted research on the potential of urban river ecosystem services. He holds a M.Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering. As an Engineer he is combining Geographic Information Systems and modeling to research on complex societal challenges such as flooding and biodiversity loss to answering them with the planning and implementation of multifunctional Nature-based Solutions. With the aspiration of sustainable and holistic NbS Planning, he is embedding and developing web-based geographic communication tools in his Research to break down transdisciplinary barriers and enhance mutual learning and social acceptance on NbS.
